November 2, 1979, Assata Shakur Escapes From Federal Prison - Today In Crime History

On this day, November 2, in the year 1979, three members of the Black Liberation Army broke fellow BLA member Assata Shakur out of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in Union Township, NJ.  Shakur was the step-aunt of deceased hip hop icon Tupac Shakur (the sister of his stepfather, Mutulu Shakur).

October 27, 1994, Government Reports U.S. Prison Population Doubled Within 10 Years - Today In Crime History

On this day, October 27, in the year 1994, the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, released a report documenting that the prison population in the United States exceeded, for the first time,  more than one million incarcerated individuals.  The number, which included those incarcerated in state and federal prisons (but did not include those incarcerated in jails), was more than double the prison population that had been reported in 1984.

October 11, 1972, Inmates Riot Over Conditions At Washington D.C. Jail - Today in Crime History

On this day, October 11, in the year 1972, approximately fifty  inmates at the Washington D.C. jail seized control of a cellblock and held twelve jail officials hostage, demanding improved jail conditions and reductions in jail overcrowding.

September 9, 1971, Inmates Riot & Seize Attica, New York Prison - Today In Crime History

On this day, September 9, in 1971 over one thousand prisoners at the state prison in Attica, NY started a riot that would last four days.  The riot began with the killing of a corrections officer, then the rioters took about 40 prison employees hostage.  Inmates actually seized control of the maximum security facility.
